Barnardo’s is committed to providing ‘Better Outcomes for More Children’. Our children’s services volunteers help the charity to deliver essential services in local communities, providing support to over 300,000 children, young people and their families. This role provides a great opportunity to join our fantastic children’s services and help make a real difference.

Young Person’s Group Helpers work across a range of groups supporting young people during their transition from being a young person to an adult. Groups tend to focus on a specific group or need, such as Care Leaver’s, Mental Wellbeing, LGBT+ Identifying Young people, Older Young Carers or Young Offenders.

Young Person’s Group Helpers are key to the success of our groups, as they help to ensure the smooth running of our groups and are able to provide one-to-one support for young people who may need additional support or encouragement to take part in group activities.

We are looking for a volunteer to be part of a two-person team supervising trips to local still water coarse fisheries for up to 5 young people who are residents of Barnardo's Moving On services. Barnardo’s Moving On service works with young people aged 16 to 25 in Preston, Lancashire who are homeless or in housing need. The trips will take place between 9am and 5pm, with a return to our Preston service by approximately 4.30pm. There may be occasions where there is an opportunity to take groups into the evening as well as during the day.

The volunteer will ideally have experience of coarse fishing, but an enthusiastic beginner would also be welcome. The volunteer would also ideally drive and have access to a motor vehicle to help transport the fishing tackle and residents.

The volunteer will be involved in all aspects of the day, which might include: setting up fishing tackle, assisting to hook and unhook live fish, and assisting young people with elements of fishing including use of equipment, general instruction and following the rules and regulations of the fisheries.

We will provide induction training and will carry out a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check free of charge. Expenses and mileage will be reimbursed.
